A Day in Chianti: Three Wineries, an Off-Road Detour, and a Whole Lot of Wine

After our first day in Florence, we spent our second day on a full day tour of the Chianti region, with visits to three wineries with Walkabout Tours: the Wine Safari.

A Rather Silly Vehicle

This tour traversed some rough ground, so it took place in a rather silly off-road vehicle. I will admit it was a hoot.

Villa Le Corte: The Ladder of Chianti

Our first stop was Villa Le Corte, which included a tour of the winemaking process and a full explanation of Chianti and the “ladder” of Chianti wines: Chianti DOCG, Classico, and Riserva. We tasted a flight of each alongside local meats.

Fattoria Rignana: Off-Roading to a Small, Charming Winery

The off-roading really kicked in on the way to our second stop, Fattoria Rignana — a small, charming winery with terrific wines, especially the Rosato. We were served lunch at their fabulous taverna: plates of bruschetta including chopped liver, lard, tomato, white beans, and marinated porcini, followed by agnolotti with porcini mushrooms and pasta with wild boar ragù sauce. Did we mention the flowing wine?

Tenuta Poggio Torselli: A Stunning Estate

Our third and final winery, Tenuta Poggio Torselli, was absolutely stunning, with a majestic manor house and gardens. The sun appeared like magic over the estate after a somewhat gray day. These wines were smaller production and higher end — a nice way to round out the day.
