Our second port of call and first of two in Germany (Kiel is next week).  We ported in Warnemunde at the mouth of the Warnow River, hence the name.  Described as a seaside resort town, for us it resembled both British resort towns and those we are very familiar with living in New England

Many folks went to Berlin for the day…three hours each way, no thanks.  We wanted something more local and after looking at options we chose a combo tour of a walking tour of Warnemunde, the train to Rostock, a walking tour of that City and the train back.  We booked it through Get Your Guide for this tour.

The morning started with a brisk breeze, overcast skies and drizzle. But walk we did.  Some breaks of sun and clouds greeted us along the way.

We followed our guide to the train for the ride to Rostock…about 12 minutes, then hopped a tram into the city center. The open square greets you with the large St. Mary’s church dominating the landscape.

Built as a Catholic Church then transformed to a Protestant church then back to Catholic. This makes the interior design both ornate and simple.  A beautiful study in contrasts.   The massive pipe organ along with its balcony for the Duke and the pulpit demonstrate the clear ornate baroque styling yet the walls and surrounding elements of the church lack adornment. The church was largely preserved and protected during the WWII bombings of Rostock.

Most surprisingly, the church houses a working astrological clock from 1472.

Strolling through the city center, a snack of bratwurst and a fresh bakery pastry.  All with surrounding views.

Returning to Warnemunde via the train brought us to sunshine so a renewed walkabout in this seaside resort before back to the ship.
